I've been working on setting up automation to grab movies and TV shows. I am pulling my hair out trying to get this to work smoothly. For a long time, I was manually downloading everything via my NAS's bittorrent client using ExpressVPN and then NordVPN, all worked smooth, and decent speed considering the paltry CPU on my NAS. But I wanted to automate it, so I have a separate Ubuntu box running docker, with containers for all the components now. I would greatly appreciate any help you might be able to offer in figuring out why I am struggling so much.

I had usenet stuff going pretty quick and its working well, but torrents are horrid. I am using a mix of private and public trackers. I can't get hardly anything to download and when it does, it's extremely slow (meaning, a few KB/sec on a gigabit fiber connection) and very few peers. I read up on this and the consensus is you need port forwarding. Well, that was never an issue in all the time I used the client on my NAS but whatever, I'm game. So I throw down money for AirVPN and setup port forwarding on my account there for a specific port. I since have been trying endless variations of Transmission, qBitTorrent and Deluge and variations of AirVPN and NordVPN trying to get something workable. I've failed for days. At one point, and I don't know why, I had amazing speeds with AirVPN for 10 min, only on Deluge and nothing else. I thought I had found the answer but nope, a half hour later I couldn't get anything to download anymore. I have not been able to repeat that success again. And to be very clear, despite wanting this for movies and TV shows, my test torrents are linux distributions and public domain stuff. Things that I can take the same magnet link and download like gangbusters on my desktop or NAS but not in my docker setup. What I'm trying is arch-delugevpn, arch-qbittorrentvpn and arch-transmission-vpn. In the case of qBT, I have heard horror stores about 4.3.x so I also have tried 4.2.x to no avail.

I have tried profiles for both NordVPN and AirVPN with UDP and TCP, and various other ports that AirVPN offers. I have tried changing the forwarded port. I can confirm I am not forwarding that port manually from my firewall (which you aren't supposed to). The firewall is not blocking any traffic and only sees OpenVPN anyway. The resource utilization on the docker host is low, I have an i7-9900 with 16GB RAM and NVMe SSD, plenty of CPU and mem and docker is allowed all resources so no constraint there. I've noticed if I restart the Deluge tracker, I get good speeds for a couple seconds and then it dies down quickly to nothing. With Transmission and qBT it never seems to work at all. I've tinkered endlessly with env variables and tried different server .ovpn files, again with no success. I also have tried publishing in docker container the port I was trying to forward with AirVPN but that didn't help. And if I load a bittorrent client natively on the Ubuntu host that docker runs on, my speeds are phenomenal, but I didn't want to run it there because I wanted fully integrated OpenVPN without having the whole machine be behind it. I want it containerized.

This is basically the last piece of the puzzle I need in order to call this done and walk away. Not everything is avail via usenet, and I really need torrents to work better than this. Is there something I have missed or something obvious that I'm doing wrong? I don't really care what client I use, as long as it works :)

I redacted info but I can assure you the port listed here is the same as what I forwarded in my AirVPN account, and then a pic of the download window showing low connections and low speeds. Basically everything is stalled.
