I really tried hard to stay with Express, over the Pandemic my router speeds got from 200+ to to lower than 100Mbps, I tried to deal with the customer service but they were not helpful. I tried every single server they told me to try, but at the end I think they are more happy to get new customers than helping their current one. A friend told me they might have throttled me...

NordVPN seems fine so far and I am back to 200+ speeds on my router. Though I have to say I liked the ExpressVPN app on PC/iOS way better and was much simpler to navigate and use. NordVPN app/UI is very clunky.

Edit: I've been with NordVPN Now with 6 months now. I still have my ExpressVPN membership (my mom uses it), so I'll still pay for Express since she likes the UI better. In no way I am trying to bash ExpressVPN here but just my take on speeds for personal usage. Interestingly I notice that many people are the reverse...

I am wondering if Nord & Express throttle their customers if they use too much bandwidth after years of service.

Hello Reddit! I’m a longtime lurker and well, this is obviously a throwaway account, because I really don’t want to connect myself to my real identity after being stalked recently and all sorts of bad stuff. But basically, I am really tired of dealing with these websites that take all this personal information and store it and sometimes index it without your consent. I try to opt out of these sites collecting information as often as I can but I still feel uncomfortable. 

Another thing: Before the pandemic I traveled back and forth from the US to Europe because I had family and business contacts and such. Well, I really didn’t realize how often sites, regular normal sites, are blocked because of location. A few times I couldn’t even watch my own Netflix account even though I pay for it, because I was using it from a banned location. 

Anyway TLDR: I want a VPN recommendation that’s good for keeping things anonymous and also one that can bypass geo blocking and that sort of thing.

I have been with CyberGhost for over 2 years now and am about halfway through my 3rd 1 year pre-paid plan.  Just noticed today that all the ">" arrows next to the Cities have disappeared.  So you can't select "Chicago" then have a choice of many Chicago server to pick from.

CyberGhost is now "managing" that selection for the end user!  What a benefit!  They will pick what server is best for you.  

I have requested a prorated refund of this year and will be researching a new VPN.  Didn't think I would have to do this again after landing here a few years ago and up until yesterday was pretty much 90% satisfied with the product.

I have no use for hand feeding me your choice of what server I can use.

- I prefer the macOS app to the Windows one as they recently added the option to use Surfshark via the top status bar as opposed to the bottom dock bar.

- Also both the macOS and iOS apps show bubble icons next to servers that indicate how filled up they are, this option isn’t available on Windows you have to manually turn this feature on for Windows and Android.

- The only pro for the Windows app for me is the Whitelister (split-tunneling) which isn’t yet available on Apple devices.

- Wouldn’t be able to comment on the Android and Linux side of things.

Speed

- I always have Surfshark on in the background while browsing, streaming and torrenting.

- Speeds have consistently been above par, especially with the “fastest server” option (which in most cases results in Latvia on my end).

- Using the WireGuard protocol usually yields the best speeds.

- Just ran a speed test (via speedtest.net), and the results with the VPN on were 96% of my usual download speed, and 95% of my usual upload speed (screenshots below). Ping is 13 as opposed to 10 without the VPN. These are really good results that even I was surprised with - 4-5% speed loss is a minuscule percentage.

Servers

- According to their website, Surfshark has “3200+ servers in 65 countries”.

- Haven’t missed any particular countries not on the list, and haven’t seen servers be too crowded - the bubble icons next to servers will be half-full at most.

- I’ve seen people wanting to be able to see which particular server they’re connected to (Surfshark only lets you select the country and in some cases city), but I personally don’t have the need for this.

Streaming

- I’m a super binge-watcher, so I have shared subscriptions to a lot of streaming sites - Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and Discovery+.

- I’ve used Surfshark with all of them and it’s worked 99% of the time.

- The times there was buffering or the VPN had been detected, I’d reconnect to a different server and it would work again.

Features

- Killswitch - usual to have for a VPN. There were a couple of times when I disconnected from Surfshark while still having some sensitive tabs open, and it killed my internet connection, so thankfully worked as designed.

- Whitelister (split-tunneling) - works fine on my Windows laptop, still waiting on it for iOS/macOS as aforementioned.

- Port forwarding - not an option, but all their servers support P2P.

- Unlimited devices - not a lot of VPNs offer this as far as I know. I share my account with my family and a couple friends, no hamper to my own connection and ends up costing me even less.

- CleanWeb - their built-in adblocker. Doesn’t block all ads, just “malicious” ones, which is fine by me as I’m generally immune to ads overall.

- Alert - kind of like Have I Been Pwned, informs you if any of your sensitive data leaks online. This one’s the cherry on top personally, it’s detected some leaks from a long time ago for accounts I didn’t even know were still active, and new ones too (like the recent Facebook data leak).

- Search - they have their own search engine without any trackers or ads, have only recently started using it and it’s become a good alternative.

Support

- Have gone on the online chat a couple of times over the past year.

- It’s on 24/7 and they were always quick to respond.

- I like the casual style of communication they use while still remaining polite and professional.

Communication

- They seem to care about their users and communicate with them openly and in a friendly and informal manner as far as I have seen.

- They also put out some interesting content on their blog, research studies and such, that don’t seem to be the generic-type posts, and are actually interesting to read through.

Windscribe Updates

Mobile Apps

An update on the mobile side of of things includes a new way to pay for Windscribe! Before this, you'd only have the option for one month or one year payments in the iOS and Android apps, but we want more of your money and so you can now subscribe to the Pro plans in the mobile apps and leave it. We actually prefer you leave it subscribed because then we can buy more cool things for the office like a taxidermied platypus. Yes we need one, it's vital to our office morale and we will call him Steve the Secure Platypus. 

Microsoft Edge Browser Add-on

A while back, Microsoft vastly changed how the Edge browser works, they gave up and converted to using Chromium as the base browser. That's great news because now we can take our Chrome browser extension and use it in Edge! Less work for us, more client support for you. If you're one of the people who is using the new Edge browser, feel free to download and try out our Edge add-on from here. Please bear in mind that we have not yet had time to do a deep dive for the Edge-specific add-on and so you'll see a few Chrome icons here and there until we fix those.

Mac Desktop App

We've received a number of emails regarding the Mac version of our desktop application and how it will be affected by the new Big Sur update. If you have not heard yet, Apple has decided to slap all privacy advocates across the face by implementing some changes to the latest version of Mac OS which affect how internet traffic is firewalled. There is a link in the Boredom Bits section below that describes these issues in more depth. 

The new update does in fact affect Windscribe but not the actual VPN Firewall in the app. There are 2 ways that traffic can be filtered on Mac OS. The first one is with an application firewall and the second is with a packet firewall. The application firewall is what has been changed in the new OS, Apple no longer gives full access to how this firewall can be used and forces some applications through regardless of what settings you have. On the other hand, the packet filter works based on the IPs and packet data of your internet traffic and this is what Windscribe uses for its firewall. This functionality has not changed in Big Sur and so there is no concern about the Windscribe VPN tunnel leaking any data. 

Where the effects of the new changes come into play are with the new 2.0 app which some of you are already using in its beta form. The new 2.0 app has the Split Tunneling feature which allows you to select which apps go through the tunnel and which ones don't. This feature uses the application firewall built into the system, the one that has been altered by Apple. As this is how the new OS will function, we can no longer offer the Split Tunneling feature in its ideal version, it will be a best-effort from us and might not work correctly for the applications you have. 



Boredom Bits - News Edition

This month, we've decided to forgo sending you hilarious or intriguing videos and opted to post some more important news related to privacy instead. But you still get the funny cat pictures, don't worry.

First off is the update to Big Sur. As mentioned in the section above, there are some worrying privacy changes Apple implemented using their new M1 chips and architecture. On a Windscribe-related note, the Microsoft Edge add-on we just published a few days ago has had a bit of controversy as well. Some naughty people (who will get coal in their stocking) decided to publish over a dozen fake and malicious VPN add-ons under the guise of legitimate VPNs. Windscribe was one of these add-ons and Microsoft finally took down the fake version from the Add-on store a few days ago. If you installed Windscribe for Edge before December, please remove it from your system and use this version instead which is the official release from us. Finally, a quick note about an announcement from Microsoft regarding a new security chip they call Pluton. Microsoft is working with AMD and Intel on this new chip which will be integrated into the hardware of your computer. Some concerns have been raised regarding the privacy aspects of this as it requires connectivity to Microsoft's cloud servers to update, opening a potential hardware backdoor. Funny because a few days ago I had a dream that I was busted by the FBI. And today, I just got a warning from Verizon for torrenting a 2021 movie - should've known. 

Before torrenting I made sure my VPN (CyberGhost) was on. My question is how did my provider know I torrented this while using my VPN? I noticed the location of my VPN was set to my current location - could this be it? I also noticed I was seeding the file for maybe 15-20 minutes.

I guess I didn't realize how little I know about protecting internet activity, but it would be greatly appreciated if someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong, or if I need to invest in a different VPN. 

TLDR; verizon caught me, and I need some to explain to me like I'm five how to torrent safely.

I'm overwhelmed with the reviews of VPNs. To summarize, I've found that Kape Technologies, who have a questionable history, bought a bunch of VPNs (ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, etc.) and also VPN review websites. Of course, now those websites are promoting the VPNs that are owned by Kape. Based on my research these VPNs below seem most independent of corruption. I have narrowed my choices to the following:


NordVPN
Surfshark
Mullvad
UltraVPN (Only because it come free with a service I just purchased. I'm not too keen on it's privacy. Any thoughts?).


I have no desire of bypassing region locks for Netflix or torrenting - I don't do either of those.
My main purpose in wanting a VPN is for two reasons:


I've had people apply for credit cards using my information (thankfully always denied) and I think a VPN will help protect more of my personal information from being stolen? (And yes, I have credit locked with all 3 credit bureaus).
And the second is based on principle. I literally have nothing to hide (other than my credit cards I guess), but I don't like that Google and the government want to track everything. Makes me annoyed.


Will a VPN help me?

Privacy and the lowest cost are the primary factors I'm looking for. I don't care too much about extra features. Any thoughts? Thank you.


I'm very new to torrents but I want to be able to seed 

For context, I am using qbittorrent and cyberghost. I've downloaded two files so far which both went fine, but neither seem to be able to seed. I tried seeding ubuntu to see if maybe there weren't enough leechers, but the most I've seen from it was 1-5B/s upload and the ratio still at 0.0. It says I've uploaded 1.1mb... 

I've checked my ports with and without the vpn and its inaccessible, but netstat on my computer says that the port is listening... Do I have to manually open the port that qbittorrent is trying to use? Does port-fowarding lower my security/privacy?

From what I've researched Cyberghost doesn't allow port-forwarding on its servers, should I use a different vpn like Mullvad? Would the dedicated ip from cyberghost work? Or should I maybe consider getting a seedbox?
